Branson, Missouri has become one of our favorite fairly local family destinations over the past several years. At just about a 3.5-hour drive from Tulsa, it’s an easy and convenient getaway that offers something for everyone. The rolling hills and scenic views are a refreshing change from the flat landscape of northeastern Oklahoma, and the area’s natural beauty makes it feel like a true escape without traveling far.
Table Rock Lake
Table Rock Lake is absolutely beautiful, especially in the fall when the surrounding hills and foliage really come alive. It’s perfect for boating, swimming, and fishing, and it’s been a staple of our summers for years. We often take the kids swimming at a local dock to cool off during Oklahoma’s brutal summer heat, and spending time on the lake is something we look forward to every single year.
Shows
Branson is well known for its variety of live shows, making it easy to find something that fits your interests. Dolly Parton’s Stampede is a popular choice and a lot of fun for families, though it is on the pricier side. We’ve also heard great things about Yakov Smirnoff, especially if you’re looking for a comedy show.
Activities
There’s no shortage of family-friendly activities in Branson. You’ll find plenty of go-kart tracks, mini-golf courses, museums, and shopping options, including Tanger Outlets and Bass Pro Shops, all of which make it easy to keep the whole family entertained.
Silver Dollar City
Silver Dollar City is a big reason we keep coming back to Branson. We purchased season passes this past year and found them to be well worth the cost—especially since there was a promotion where our twins received free passes, meaning we only paid for three.
If you visit the park twice in a season, the pass easily pays for itself. There are plenty of rides for younger kids, as well as thrilling roller coasters for older kids and adults, including Time Traveler. The food inside the park is surprisingly good and reasonably priced for an amusement park. Clara Belle’s Cinnamon Bread is a must-try.
Silver Dollar City is also known for its Christmas season and beautiful light displays, though it can get extremely crowded on certain weekends. For busy days, the park offers an express option called the TrailBlazer Pass. A single-use pass (good for eight rides) starts around $53 per person, while an unlimited option starts at about $85 per person. These passes are limited and can sell out on peak days.
Food
Food is one area where Branson could improve overall, but there are definitely some great spots if you know where to look.
- Downing Street Pour House (Hollister): A solid choice for pub-style food. The pastrami sandwich is excellent, and the burgers are consistently good.
- Carly’s Healthy Cuisine: A hidden gem just off Main Street in downtown Branson. This small, no-frills spot doesn’t usually have a long wait and is fantastic. The stir-fry noodles with hand-pulled noodles are a family favorite—choose your protein and spice level.
- Parlor Doughnuts: These croissant-style doughnuts are incredible and worth the stop.
- Getting Basted: A popular barbecue spot with great service. The burnt ends and pork tacos stood out, but be prepared for a wait during peak times.
- The Keeter Center: A more upscale dining experience that’s well worth it. Dinner typically requires reservations, but you can stop in anytime for ice cream if you’re just looking for dessert.
- Thai Thai Cuisine: Surprisingly good Thai food for the area and a solid option if you’re craving something different.
- Mexican Food: This isn’t Branson’s strong suit, but Little Hacienda in Hollister is the best option we’ve found.
