About Us
We’ve called Tulsa, Oklahoma, home for the past 12 years, thanks to David’s work as a Physician Assistant (PA) in the area. Our family includes our 8-year-old son and our 5-year-old twin daughters. Like many young people, we started our adult lives with a mountain of student loan debt. After David completed PA school, he worked as a hospitalist for the first 10 years of his career. His extra shifts during that time allowed us to pay off nearly $200K in student loans.
Initially, we followed the traditional financial wisdom, investing everything into a 401(k) with the hope that someday, maybe, we’d be able to retire. But after reading books like Rich Dad Poor Dad and The 4-Hour Workweek, we realized there was another way to approach finances and investing. David had also been struggling with severe burnout from his years in medicine, so we decided it was time for a big change.
In 2024, we made the bold decision to pack up our kids and spend the next 12 months traveling the world. Our goal is to give our children a chance to experience the places they’ve read about in textbooks and to learn about the world firsthand. In 2023, we took a 3-week adventure through Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Singapore, which gave us a taste of what it would be like to live out of a small suitcase for a longer period of time. We rented out our house, placed our belongings in storage, and sold or donated many items. Now, we’re wrapping up our affairs and preparing to fly to Japan in early January 2025.
For the next year, we’ll be homeschooling our children as we explore Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. We plan to spend the first half of 2025 in Southeast Asia, and then we’ll likely head to Europe, though the itinerary is flexible.
Erika holds a degree in biology, but for the past several years, she has been a stay-at-home mom, a role she cherishes and finds deeply rewarding thanks to David’s hard work and their shared commitment to creating this adventure. Together, we’re excited to take this journey as a family and document everything along the way. We’ll share our experiences with exotic foods, cultural insights, and tips for traveling with young children, hoping to inspire other families to follow their own dreams of exploration.
We invite you to join us on this epic adventure by following us on social media as we explore the world and learn together as a family.
